BASE Jumping And Travelling The World With Tim Howell

Tim Howell has one of the most adrenaline filled histories from all of our interviews. Tim has wildlife guided in Africa, and then went on to join the Royal Marines. It was here as a Commando, that he developed his mental and physical robustness. He became Mountain Leader and has gone on to achieve so much more. Using this love and passion for the mountains and climbing, Tim did his first BASE jump in France, 2013.

Tim puts his goals out there for everyone to see, with one big one being the first to climb and then jump the ‘classic’ six North Faces of the Alps. Having now left the Royal Marines to pursue this, Tim is now free to chase this career full time and currently bases himself out of a perfect location: Switzerland.

Tim clearly has a passion for the mountains. He expresses this from deep within; as a child when skiing he just had an urge to climb to the summit without the lifts. Something many of us share, and something we even talk about in our interview with mountain climber Lotta Hintsa.

Early Influences

Climbing scaffolding as a child with his Father, Tim always had controlled environments to explore as a child. With a Father in the Paratroopers, this kind of upbringing isn’t unheard of. But what Tim has gone on to achieve is certainly a step ahead than most!

In addition, his Mother worked for British Airways, which meant that he spent a lot of his childhood stowed away on planes shooting off to different countries around the world.

Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome

As we often do on this podcast, we talk about mindset on expeditions and discuss how we confront and tackle challenges. Tim’s view here is shaped by his own work and his time with the Royal Marines. “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome” is a fairly well known phrase from here, but it is so true.

It is something Tim has put to practice multiple times, adapting to overcome and come out the otherside of the challenge with experience.

Tim also talks about another simple but effective method: stepping stones. Instead of thinking about goals and known challenges in their full journey, break this down to simple and manageable steps. Simple, but effective.

It’s all about eradicating the risk and doing what’s right.

Just Like Formula One… Right?

On the podcast, we discuss and compare BASE Jumping to Formula 1. Tim often uses this as a fair analogy. You don’t just jump into an F1 car and go, do you?!

You spend years training and practicing and getting itno faster and faster cars before you touch F1 level.

Now, imagine if you never heard about Formula One unless someone had an accident. You’d think it was dangerous and ridiculous, surely? Just like Formula One, there is so much training and preparation, even before you put a wingsuit on. Add on to this the maths and the safety checks and you have yourself a perfectly decent, adrenaline-filled sport.

If you are a skydiver, Tim also offers BASE Jump courses, here.
